I remember being a kid and having all these grand ideas and dreams of who I would become when I was older. Was it an artist? A cop? A teacher? Who knew? I just remember constantly switching back and forth between aspirations. The idea is that each plane represents a dream...and sometimes our dreams don't always happen or pan out the way we expect them to y'know? But that shouldn't stop us from continuing to build and fly more 'dreams'...because not all dreams crash, I reckon. This was one of my first ideas after college and I'm so glad I could finally execute it! Consumed Last week I had the privilege of attending APSI at USF for this upcoming school year! I was thrown into a room with 20 other art teachers and we had to do a mini sustained investigation regarding a social issue, and only 3 days to do it! It really made me think, and made me realize what my students are going to have to do in a year on a larger scale. I'm going to copy and paste my presentation, so if you're interested please go ahead and read "How much are we consumed by our self-perceptions when it comes to social media? What does physical consumption look like? I wanted to portray the literal consumption of oneself through phone usage while also conveying the isolation it may cause in a surreal way. Inspiration came from the artist Antoine Geiger and from the students I teach who cherish their online identities more than their physical ones. The ability to interact with anyone at the click of a button encourages the idea of isolation. I used a self portrait to strengthen the idea of self-perception. Using a tripod and a self timer I was able to capture compositions of myself in various poses. The dim room allowed for a more successful edit in Photoshop of the light effect being emitted from the phone. I started with a white light, but through experimentation of blending modes I was able to attain the black light shown; symbolizing the self-doubt that comes from social media consumption. I practiced using pixel sorting but eventually used the smudge tool specifically on the face to stretch the pixels; which was used to symbolize the uploading of selfies and personal thoughts." His practice explores themes of identity, emotional experience, and personal narrative through the use of symbolism and surreal visual language. Miller received his Bachelor’s degree in Art from Florida Gulf Coast University, and now a Master’s in Fine Art from Savannah College of Art and Design, where he continues to work on his unreleased thesis: Bloom/ine. His work draws influence from composited scenes, particularly those of Erik Johansson and Jerry Ueslmann. His photographs investigate internal psychological states, such as depression or anxiety, in hopes to create conversations. Through careful planning, often in the form of sketches, Miller plays with the boundary of reality and fantasy. His models range from self-portraiture, to family, and to mainly friends. Miller’s work has been exhibited both regionally and internationally. He has received recognition from organizations including Critical Mass and Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, and his work has been featured in publications such as Bait//Switch and Al-Tiba19.
